چکیده

The performance of machine learning methods is heavily dependent on the choice of data representation. In real world applications such as scene recognition problems, the widely used low-level input features can fail to explain the high-level semantic label concepts. In this work, we address this problem by proposing a novel patchbased latent variable model to integrate latent contextual representation learning and classification model training in one joint optimization framework. Within this framework, the latent layer of variables bridge the gap between inputs and outputs by providing discriminative explanations for the semantic output labels, while being predictable from the low-level input features. Experiments conducted on standard scene recognition tasks demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach, comparing to the state-of-the-art scene recognition methods.

A Joint Semantic Vector Representation Model for Text Clustering and Classification

Text clustering and classification are two main tasks of text mining. Feature selection plays the key role in the quality of the clustering and classification results. Although word-based features such as term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) vectors have been widely used in different applications, their shortcoming in capturing semantic concepts of text motivated researches to use...

Multi-level Adaptive Active Learning for Scene Classification

Semantic scene classification is a challenging problem in computer vision. In this paper, we present a novel multi-level active learning approach to reduce the human annotation effort for training robust scene classification models. Different from most existing active learning methods that can only query labels for selected instances at the target categorization level, i.e., the scene class lev...

Scene Classification Via pLSA

Given a set of images of scenes containing multiple object categories (e.g. grass, roads, buildings) our objective is to discover these objects in each image in an unsupervised manner, and to use this object distribution to perform scene classification. We achieve this discovery using probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis (pLSA), a generative model from the statistical text literature, here ap...

Scene Image Classification and Segmentation with Quantized Local Descriptors and Latent Aspect Modeling THÈSE

The ever increasing number of digital images in both public and private collections urges on the need for generic image content analysis systems. These systems need to be capable to capture the content of images from both scenes and objects, in a compact way that allows for fast search and comparison. Modeling images based on local invariant features computed at interest point locations has pro...

Image Classification via Sparse Representation and Subspace Alignment

Image representation is a crucial problem in image processing where there exist many low-level representations of image, i.e., SIFT, HOG and so on. But there is a missing link across low-level and high-level semantic representations. In fact, traditional machine learning approaches, e.g., non-negative matrix factorization, sparse representation and principle component analysis are employed to d...
